The Fourth Annual Miles Awards for Achievement in Film

With the Golden Globes last week, the movie awards season is in full swing. But while there are still numerous awards ceremonies left to come, the time has finally come for the clear gold standard in recognizing cinematic excellence: The Miles Awards! I know, I know, hold your applause. Now in its fourth year, The Miles Awards are my response to the frustrations of being a devout awards season viewer and wishing I was calling the shots. Here are my shamelessly subjective picks for the best of the best in film for 2018 in fifteen categories.

A couple notes before we get to the winners and nominees. I ultimately decided to not include The Tale in consideration for these awards because it was a TV movie that didn't have a theatrical release. This explains why, for example, several actors from The Tale don't have Miles Award nominations even though my list of 100 Best Film Performances of 2018 suggests they should. I also, as always, made the distinction of leading/supporting performances for myself, which sometimes goes against the categorizations of other, more-recognizable-but-some-might-say-lesser awards ceremonies. That's why obviously leading actor in Green Book Mahershala Ali is listed in the leading category instead of supporting. It's also why Emma Stone didn't get a Miles Award nomination for The Favourite— she would have if I had considered her for the supporting category, but this was clearly a film with three leads. Lastly, in one of the acting categories and in the original score category, I included seven nominees instead of six. For the score category, it's because there were so many great scores this year that I felt like I had to recognize all seven. For the acting category, I think it will make sense when you see the two performances I placed sixth and seventh. They're two performances that really worked in tandem and I felt like I couldn't justify including one without the other. And because these are the Miles Awards and I'm Miles I can do that because I am drunk with power! Evil laugh!
