What an exciting awards season it has already been! This film awards season has been filled with surprises and controversies and lots of unprecedented choices. It’s also a season that features a surprisingly high number of really great movies. When I look at the Oscars Best Picture lineup it’s a group that actually feels like it makes sense. The ten films selected are certainly not the ones that I would have picked, and there are more than a few that I roll my eyes at. But in general, I think there’s at least SOMETHING interesting about each of these films. There’s no film I can look at and not at least understand why it might have been included if I put my own opinions aside. I genuinely don’t think that has happened since the category was expended to ten nominees 13 years ago. As someone who spends too much time thinking about a ceremony that I find inherently problematic and disappointing, it’s pretty exciting and I count it as a win! But even on the Oscars’ best year, it can never hold a candle to what I think is, at this point, considered the gold standard for film awards. I’m speaking of course of the Miles Awards. Now in its eighth year, the Miles Awards is decided entirely by me (Miles) which means it’s immune to the typical awards season politics and campaign bureaucracy. It’s simply a celebration of what I see as the best film had to offer in the year 2022.
I don’t go into detail here, so if you’re looking for film analysis beyond just a list of titles, check out my favorite films of the year. And if you are looking for good performances beyond the ones I mention here, you can see my list of my 100 favorite movie performances of the year. Now, bring on the awards!
